The earliest trade manual describing the art of rose and swash turning in English was Mechanick Exercises by Joseph Moxon, published in England in 1678. However, inspirational French works of the 18th century, L'Art de Tourneur, by Plumier (1701) and Manual de Tourner by Bergeron (1796) delivered far greater depth and detail.
