House Numbers
The evolution of house numbers and address plaques is rooted in the historical development of signs primarily used for business marketing. Early sings advertised to overwhelmingly illiterate communities and were therefore designed with easily recognizable imagery representing the goods or services provided on the premises. Lettering on signs became increasingly popular as populations achieved higher literacy rates, which ultimately led to the practice of numbering buildings by street address.
