View This Item antique four seasons majolica plaques Circa 1850s (or earlier) A monumental set of four magnificent antique polychrome Majolica in bas relief four seasons plaques. Each plaque is in the Renaissance style and in the manner of Andrea De La Rovia by Genori or another Italian maker. Each is approximately three inches thick & framed in a molded 4" solid walnut frame of oval form. The plaques without frames are 21" by 30". Overall: 27" by 36". One signed to the reverse with the artist or sculptor's name which appears to be "Sergenti". Spring: In deep (2") bas relief, the traditional representation of Spring. Frolocking nude putto's in a garden setting, playing with crowned wreaths. The entire composition is filled with blooming shrubs and flowering garlands, wrapped around tree trunks. Summer: Summer plaque is represented with nude putto's; three of them are involved in harvesting wheat while the fourth one sleeps. Autumn: Four nude putto's, two are tangled, fighting with a goat and surrounded by grapevines; the two others are seen sitting on the ground or foliage drinking wine. Winter: In a frigid outdoor setting, there are four nude putto's seeking refuge from the bitter cold as one blows air towards a camp fire. Of note is a large dog in the middle of the composition. The fifth putto receives comfort on his bare buttocks from the flame. Condition: All have been professionally cleaned, restored and there are is no loss. The plaques are attached to the frames by removable pegs. The fine reliefs are colored with various metallic oxides in different shades of blue, green, purple, yellow and black.
