Reaction Wood is the consequence of a leaning tree, which is characterized by a dense and brittle grain that has a predisposition to respond irregularly to atmospheric changes. In hardwood trees, reaction wood forms on the upper side of the lean and is called tension wood. In softwood trees reaction wood forms on the lower side of the lean and is called compression wood.
