Stoves
Production of the cast iron stove began in quantity in the first quarter of the 18th century. These first stoves of German design were five-plate or Jamb stoves. By the mid 18th century six-plate stoves, which were also called close stoves, were in production. Around 1760, ten-plate stoves, which were reminiscent of but larger than the six-plate stove, were developed. With four more plates forming an oven with two hinged doors, the ten-plate stove had an opening on both sides and smoke passed around the ends of the oven and out a pipe. The ten-plate stove is widely accepted as the genesis of the subsequent cook stove.
