Oil

Oil paint consists of ground pigments that are mixed into a medium of oil. Linseed oil was widely used in early modern Europe, with poppy seed oil, walnut oil and safflower oils used to a lesser extent. Various oils possess unique properties that impart particular characteristics to the resulting paint. Formulations with different oils can affect sheen, drying times and discoloration resulting from aging. Painters often employ an assortment of oils at various levels of an individual painting to achieve specific effects.
