Dust and Shavings
Paul Aydelott started carving after deciding to make some bookends. After making some practice cuts with new woodworking tools, he progressed quickly from simple relief carvings to "carving in the round" to wildlife scenes and finally to carvings of people based on his first artistic love--photography. Usually avoiding straight ahead postures of people sculpted, his one-of-a-kind creations exude subtle but strong personalities through slight tilts of their heads, cuts of their eyes, or expressions of their mouth. Wood burning brings out details of eyes and hair. From their viewing perspective, the sculptures look as if they are carved in their full three dimensions although they are usually much thinner. These carvings beg to be touched; hand rubbed finishes bring out the warm personalities of the subjects. Oh, the bookends? They never were made...found something better to do!
