Spanish colonization during the 17th century pushed displaced Pueblo cultures into Navajo territories, the Navajo were taught to weave by the talented Pueblo artisans. Although their presence was unwelcome, the invading Spaniards introduced sheep and subsequently wool to Native Americans, which eventually replaced early weaving materials. Weaving became ingrained in Navajo culture; their creations were highly coveted by Native Americans and European colonists. When uprooted to a New Mexico reservation and separated from their sheep, the Navajo returned to the use of fibrous weaving materials.
