Tribal Artifacts

The dance dramas performed on Java and Bali originated as ancient rituals honoring ancestors and the deities, and as Hindu and Islamic religions infiltrated the ceremonial stories became more opulent. On Java, a predominantly Moslem society, trance dances are performed with a variety of animal masks (topeng) that are held over a fire to draw in an animal spirit, which brings the dancer under its control. Honoring Hindu traditions, the Balinese perform ceremonies with elaborately carved wooden masks in a wide variety of forms that reflect their belief that every entity has a spirit.
