Tribal Dress

Disguised as animals, spirits, and ancestors, African masquerade performers enact popular legends with music, dance, and drama that can recount historical events, and express social values. Often part of religious ceremonies, masqueraders can represent spirits who may possess the dancers, giving them special knowledge that they express in their performance. Masqueraders generally undergo intensive training to gain the knowledge and earn the privilege of performing a specific masquerade.
