Precision Instruments
Vintage precision instruments are constructed in combinations of metals, woods, and glass. From the mid 1700s, brass was the principal metal being used in the production of the precision tool, durability being the primary consideration. To protect the precision instrument from pitting, brass surfaces were gilded between the 1500s and early 1700s, lacquered until the mid 1800s, after which either nickel plate or lacquer was used.
