Lumber and Timber
The fledgling American timber industry benefited from improvements in technology that made remote areas accessible, and the logging activities more productive. The approaching railroads brought an increase in the demand for timber. Railway construction involved independent contractors known as tie hacks who cut wood for the roadbeds. Later, lumbermen brought in two-man whipsaws and began cutting boards.
