Through the efforts of colonial Spanish missionaries, southwestern tribes of indigenous Americans widely adopted Catholicism. Three hundred years of religious folk art ensued with efforts of devout tribal followers to deify their beliefs. Hispanic Americans have continued this tradition producing representations of holy persons called Santos, which when three-dimensional are referred to as bulatos.
