Pews and Pulpits
During the Medieval era, the clergy and the choir had assigned seating reserved for their use and the congregation stood or knelt during mass. The Protestant Reformation heralded a focus on preaching; necessitating assigned seating for the congregation as well. Benches and box pews were initially introduced and as attendance began to overwhelm available seating, hanging pews were added along the walls.
