QUAN 'AM - QUAN YIN, VIETNAM

A stunning smaller carved Quan 'Am, or Quan Yin, from northern Vietnam. The multiarmed Goddess is typical of Buddhist statuary from the north, which in turn resonates strongly with southern China motifs and expressions. The lineage of Avalokiteshvara evolving into Quan Yin is evident here with this androgynous representation of a figure currently described as being female but which was relatively recently a decidedly male personification of the Buddha Of The Future. A forest of arms offers blessings and boons to all living things, while additional all seeing heads face in every direction, including the dimensions of time and space. The back screen and central figure are carved of fragrant camphor wood, with many layers of paint covering the entire piece. This Quan 'Am figure shows past repair in the front base - a small vertical crack that has been filled at one time. Overall good condition. Age indeterminate, but most indicators suggest 1930s as a reasonable period for original carving. Stands about 17 1/2" high, overall.
