A Man Sitting on the Moko
Timors statue. A Man Sitting on the Moko This statue was found in Belu, Alor Island, a small island in Indonesia. Moko is kind of drum which is made from fine bronze. Despite its small size, seventy languages are found on Alor, making it difficult for people who live a mere 15 miles away to communicate with each other. This is the reason why Moko drums are an important part of Alors culture. On this island, a male who wishes to marry must present a moko drum to the family of his future wife. Its like a dowry to the womans family. Unfortunately, since there is a severe shortage of these drums, many couples must leave the island to marry or remain single. Image of a man sitting on the Moko represent the power, wealth, and tradition in Alor community. Only the people who fulfill that condition could have this symbol. Height : 75 Weight : 150 pounds Age : mid-20th century Moko drums typically are decorated with Hindu symbolism.
