Nautical ArtThe tradition of antique nautical art is as old and as enduring as the sea. For artist and collector alike, maritime art is an archive of historic sailing vessels, legendary tales and the sailors. Strict historians may focus on an era, an event or a place in history, often investing considerable time and assets to capture a moment in nautical history. Others collecting antique nautical art are creating a seemingly timeless meritime atmosphere.
Nautical InstrumentsSailors employed various nautical instruments to assist navigation and complete their voyages safely. Ships were equipped with an assortment of nautical instruments according to size, category and length of voyage. The most vital nautical instruments were the astrolabe, the sextant, compass and gyrocompass. Other important nautical instruments included the wind gauge, the gyroscope, the log, and the sea gauge et cetera.
Nautical LightingLightships as we know them, have existed little more than two centuries. During the last few centuries BC however, Roman coast guard galleys carried open framework baskets at their mastheads that allowed a fire to provided nautical lighting. Manned by an armed crew, such vessels patrolled the Roman coasts to guide and protect incoming vessels.
