Wind Chimes

The development and use of wind chimes spans multiple eras, various cultures and served assorted functions. The oldest wind chimes discovered were found at archeological sites in South East Asia dating to 3000 B.C. and were fabricated from a range of materials including bone, wood, stone and shells. By 2000 B.C. wind chimes had been independently developed in the Mediterranean region and were being cast in bronze by the ancient Egyptians. Early wind chimes served spiritual as well as practical applications. Primitive spiritualists believed the clatter produced by their fabrications would ward off malevolent spirits, while farmers used the wind chimes to scare foraging wildlife from their crops. When Chinese foundries began casting bells circa 1100 B.C., the musical evolution of wind chimes commenced.
