Chair Parts
There are two methods of wooden chair construction, "joined" chairs, and "stick" chairs. Joined chairs are attached with mortise-and-tenon joints creating robust joinery, but production is time-consuming and expensive, thus consequently reserved for formal seating. The "stick built" chair was more economical, being characterized by round tenons fitted into round sockets. Round tenons were easily turned on a lathe, while sockets were simply bored with a drill.
