Rubbing out a finish involves the abrasion of the surface with very fine sandpaper to remove surface defects and level it out, then polish to the desired sheen. Traditionally this was accomplished by hand using pumice and rottenstone, an effective but physically challenging task. Modern finishing tools and supplies such as power sanders and buffing equipment have simplified this task.
