Telephones
Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell independently designed devices capable of transmitting speech electrically in the 1870s. The pair delivered their inventions to the patent office within hours of one another, however it was Bell who patented the telephone first. This led to bitter litigation over the invention of the telephone, which Bell won.
