The technique of French polishing, a traditional application of shellac, has changed little since first formulated in the late 18th century. Various recipes were concocted over the years that call for ingredients believed to enhance the finish; most were based on unfounded information, some remain in practice. The resin of coniferous trees typically known as rosin was often listed as one of the main ingredients, which is now known to rapidly degrade. Linseed oil is often listed as well; linseed oil can cause the film to become stubborn and to darken.
