Oil Lamps
In 1850, Samuel M. Kier of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania developed oil lamps that burned kerosene which he distilled from surface oil. In 1859, Colonel Edwin L. Drake struck oil in Pennsylvania, creating the first economical and readily available source of kerosene, and earlier forms of oil lamps became obsolete almost immediately.
