Finials

The early middle Ages accepted woodturning as an independent craft, which was significantly improved by the introduction of the pole lathe circa 1150. Although still cord driven, the pole lathe incorporated tension via a bent tree branch or cut pole coordinated with a treadle which regulated the speed at which the piece turned. This arrangement dispensed with the need for an assistant.
