The art of making box and chests is rooted in the history of folk art and has evolved as fine art. During the slow winter month’s farmers made use of their time working wood, wood was a commodity in abundant supply. Box and chest making initially employed as a practical means for storage, developed into an art form. Rural folk artists created ornamented dowry chests, hope chests and the like. City bound artists disillusioned by the lackluster industrial surroundings in the late 19th studied folk art woodworking. Emulating their rural counterparts, the urban artists refined box making to a fine art.
