Stone Art

Engraved stone found in Blombos Cave, on the Southern Cape coast may be the earliest known artworks. This stone art predates the oldest known cave paintings by more than 40,000 years. Approximately 77,000 years ago, the geometrical stone carving on two pieces of red ochre were created. The lines and triangle patterns illustrate the use of abstract images and foretell of an intellectual capacity to discuss the meaning if the stone carving. The red ochre was not indigenous to cave and had to be carried from 30 or 40 kilometers.
