As I begin to pursue my career as an oil painter in 1989, I didn?t realize the incredible journey I was about to embark upon. Learning the craft, the use of materials and equipment, and the techniques in which each artist becomes an individual was exhausting. But with each small accomplishment, there is reward. Surpassed only by my family, it is the most satisfying experience I will ever know.
Through the continuous study of such artists as Edgar Payne, John Carlson, the many California artists and others, I realized I still had something else to learn, perhaps the most important, learning the talent of seeing. This is best acquired by plein air painting, painting out in nature, which in itself is a most rewarding experience..... Once my eyes became trained
to see the beautiful chromas and balanced values, painting took on an entirely new, wonderful appreciation. I spend as much time as possible painting on site. These paintings usually are smaller paintings but, are a bery important part of larger in studio paitings. I am convinced this heightened awareness will progress, and enhance my paintings as I continue to grow. I hope you will enjoy this experience with
me.
Gary?s subject matter is as varied as his western wanderings---from serene seascapes to the rugged landscapes and cloudscapes of the Midwest---from portraits of the American spirit to thoughtful still lifes.
Gary's paintings are all oil on canvas and range in size from 8" x 10" to 36" x 48". He welcomes commissions as well.
