Postcards & Ephemera
In 1898, American publishers were permitted to print and sell cards bearing the inscription Private Mailing Card, Authorized by Act of Congress on May 19, 1898, which gave rise to the modern post card. The cards were posted at the same one-cent rate as a government postal. Writing was reserved for the front of these vintage post cards, as with the government and earlier vintage post card. In 1901 use of the authorization inscription was discontinued and the words Post Card were permitted on the undivided back, but writing was still limited to the front. Use of a divided back enabled the front to be reserved entirely for design; this began in England in 1902, and by 1907 the United States adopted the improvement.
