Flatware & Utensils
Shape usually provides an indication of age in an American silver spoon; commonly fabricated from two pieces prior to 1800 the point of fusion is easily identified. After 1800, spoons were generally made from one piece of silver and lack the aforementioned seam. Bowl shape can also substantiate age, the early 1600s had fig-shaped then elliptical bowls, by the 1800 spoons were produced in their current shape. Initially the handle of the spoon was straight, but by 1730 the tip of the handle was turned down and by 1830 bent up.
