Exceptional carved wood, American Empire sofa - 2080
A scroll sofa, with heavier than usual American Empire carving, professionally and appropriately re-upholstered. The wood carving is heavier and more ornate than typical Duncan Phyfe, and in the style of second French empire. Heavy paw-feet on each corner. In general, upon researching existing sofas, this one is richer, and more interesting than any other viewed by us, including many in Magazine Antiques over many years. EXCELLENT CONDITION, ALL WOOD IS ORIGINAL, AND PATINATION INTACT; AUTHENTICALLY RE-COVERED.----PROVENANCE: From the historic Walkerton Tavern, (built in 1825) (picture available) in Glen Allen (of Henrico County), VA. Now a small museum, this inn was purchased by one S.Douglas Fleet, and restored once in the mid 1990's (see 3rd picture down), and now extensively again (see article). The sofa was discovered, saved and expertly restored using a fine cotton upholstery fabric of subtle silver and blue stripes. NOTE: A near-exact original of this same sofa is seen in the Ware-Lyndon House of Athens, Georgia, built in 1850. It is pictured in "Victorian Homes" magazine, October/2004 issue, on page 62 (shown in the 2nd picture here). ARTICLE COMMENTS: " probably American, possibly made just prior to 1820. It is a typical long, straight-backed, very formal American Empire."
