Extremely rare, 6-over-6-arm original gas chandelier, almost certainly Cornelius & Sons, probably 1876, (determined after extensive research), though apparently unsigned (Cornelius fixtures were often not signed). Gilt-finished cast brass, stemming from Eastlake style, with endless additional ornamentation. Six winged griffins adorn each lower arm, six lion-heads around the base; three separately cast butterflies on upper-center; the vase towards the top has high-relief angels and Aztec-like winged heads, abutted with two complete, ornate upright butterflies (with wings closed together). There are innumerable detailed and abstract design features throughtout the entire fixture; all pieces are highly decorated. The gas valves are ornate and heavy, including a marvelous, large lower finial. There is also an additionally added (original to the piece) ornate gas valve, most likely to power a gas table lamp in the room in which it hung. This chandelier is 100% complete (less the glass-ware and necessary holders). We re-cast in brass, a small bracket that was missing, and repaired one of the gas valves that was breaking due to having been bent. We have only very lightly cleaned it in order to preserve antique patina and value. The gas valves have NOT been drilled through (wiring has been jumped over them � some original gas stems have even survived on this �gasolier�). The price here is for this piece in the described condition, AS IS. The glass-ware should be chosen first, so that the fitter size is known and can be properly done when re-wiring and installing the correct sockets.
