This powerful shaman's mask from the Jumla area of western Nepal represents an uncommon motif in Himalayan carved ritual masks. The fangs, horns and grotesque features suggest that such a mask was used to intimidate and subjugate dangerous untamed energies that could threaten the well being of families and villages. Thick patina of greasy smoke and incense - gouge marks from carving with no saw kerf marks. This fine mask dates to the early 20th century or earlier. SOLD!!!!!! Approximately 16" tall
