SHIELD - KALINGA - PHILIPPINES

A classic warrior's shield from north Luzon, Philippines. The Kalinga people have a reputation for ferocity and their traditional willingness to fight. Kalinga men until very recently engaged in head taking raids in order to validate their manhood and increase their attractiveness to the opposite sex. Their shields are distinctive, typified in part by the bowed out 'belly' in front, which forms a thick protection for the carved hand-hold on the rear of the piece. Kalinga shields closely resemble the shields used by the neighboring Bontoc tribal group, but differ in the use of slightly more graceful lines and the application of subtle linear designs on the facing side. These older carved wood shields with rattan lacing are great display items, with their pleasing lines and attractive silver-grey patina. Dimensions: c. 13" x 42"
