SHIELD - ITNEG - PHILIPPINES

This is a beautiful shield from the northern Philippines, made and used by the Itneg, or Tinguian people. Itneg shields are distinguished by the upper and lower projections that are rounded and appear almost stick like, in comparison to the Bontoc and neighboring Kalinga shields that are thin and flattend towards the ends. A further fine point regarding this particular shield is the hand grip on the rear of the piece that is shaped in the form of an inverted male figure. (No, this shield is not pictured upside down!) The entire shield is very well carved, graceful, and is reinforced with rattan lacing. Plaited rattan rings are also set along the top and bottom projections. The Itneg live in the remote mountains of western north Luzon and are known for their well built forest houses, fine bead work worn by the women, and their overall hard working industriousness. This shield is an especially good example of their skilled handiwork. Dimensions: c. 47" x 14" SOLD!!!!
