CARVED WOOD GRANARY DOOR
Here is a granary door from the Ifugao people of n. Luzon, Philippines. The Ifugao store their harvested rice in structures made of hand hewn slabs of hardwood, smallish sheds that resemble in shape the gardener's storage sheds we find today at Sears and Walmart. To the Ifugao, the planting, growing, harvesting and storage of their staple food, rice, is the primary focus of their year long cycle of ritual and ceremony. The doors that seal the granary must be strong physically and they must also be able to protect the rice from negative unseen forces. The anthropomorphic figure on this door is a guardian figure that protects the rice from rats as well as from troublesome spirits that can steal the essence of the food. Circa 1950, at least, this is a very collectible and displayable piece of tribal art. It comes with a sturdy welded iron stand that allows the door to stand on its own. Dimensions: c. 12" x 39" x 1 1/2"
