DAYAK KLEDI - GOURD FLUTE
The Dayak tribes of Borneo have a traditional wind instrument usually crafted from bamboo, pitch, and a gourd which they call a 'kledi'. The kledi is similar to an instrument in Thailand called a 'kaen'. This kledi is a wonderful example of Dayak craftsmanship and ingenuity, utilizing a set of 5 bamboo tubes fixed in a hollow carved wood base, rather than in a gourd. The base is carved with traditional Orang Ulu motifs and the pitch ring that seals the bamboo to the wood is molded and modeled with designs that neatly merge with the wood carving. Here is an example of native handicrafts still being produced by tribal peoples, extending and interpreting their own creative traditions. Approximately 15" high x 10" long
